The Possibilities With Lithium Ion Batteries-Powering Up The World With Lithium ION Batteries!

Batteries have been around for ages! But as technology advances batteries and their capabilities also advance. So much so that now we can claim true electrical power that is not just becoming sufficient for our needs anywhere and anytime but it has also become very mobile and location-friendly! Take a look at what batteries now can do for electric utility companies! Indeed Powering Up The World With Lithium Ion batteries is now a reality!

Electric Utility Companies

The year 2017 saw a huge jump in the ability of batteries to become part of big electric utility companies in the production or augmenting production of electrical power. Tesla Inc installed a 100MW/129MWhr battery system in South Australia with a project completion around November-December of 2017. This massive undertaking makes use of the ever more versatile qualities of Lithium Ion batteries.

Lithium Ion storage batteries leads the pack in its ability to hold the charge, control it and be re-charged and discharged faster than its counterparts. The South Australian utility company revealed a 90% jump in savings in the production of electrical power since Tesla’s Powerpack batteries have been completed and put into service! Now, if that is not getting closer to powering up the world with Lithium Ion batteries, I do not know what does!

Lithium Ion Battery Packs And More

Lithium Ion Battery packs are now available in many forms and from many manufacturers. From power tools to portable power generators to oxygen concentrators. Below is an example of a Lithium Ion application for a power tool available from Amazon.

The Best Of Electrical Mobility

Conventional electrical power plants are HUGE. Take hydros with their massive dams, electric diesel engines, gas turbines and even wind generators. They are massive and once installed they do not move!

Hydros and their generators are located as dictated by the water supply locations. With the coming of solar panels and storage batteries however, we can now install an electrical power plant anywhere where the sun shines. And their size can vary from a rooftop system to ones that cover hundreds of acres of land. On rooftops, parking lots, empty fields, desert land, ships, space craft and your backyards!

Below is a mini-grid set up but is representative of larger systems when scaled up to serve as huge power plants.

This kit is available at Amazon. Please click below picture and/or link.

Homes And Commercial Buildings

Homes and commercial buildings are two areas where the solar/storage batteries combination take a very aggressive role in implementation of the systems.  As the cost of installed solar and storage batteries continue to fall worldwide , more and more installations are being seen. Roof tops are the favorite location for the panels and lead the way in installations globally.

The system below has a total of 800 Watts and represents a mini-grid and should be scaled up if used on homes. This system can be expanded upon using multiple similar systems. This could be great for remote installations seeking a small kilowatt power system.

Electric Vehicles

Tesla Inc continues to lead this industry. The big three car makers of America tried to pioneer the design and manufacture of purely electric vehicles years ago but only a few models came out of these effort. None considered to be a big success. Tesla however, coming up with several models is seeing a very impressive result. Their technology can easily put our gas-fueled-vehicle manufacturers out of business. Purely electric vehicles are very efficient, very environment friendly with no gas emissions to worry about, very quiet and has the power to do the work now done by their gas-guzzling cousins. And you guessed it right! These cars use lithium ion batteries!

Drones, the modern day horse-and-buggy, the work horse of the future! From tiny camera-carrying units to ones that work as taxis, they are coming forward really fast. My vision remains: A trans-pacific and transatlantic chain of floating pit stops for flying cars and drones that could make family-size units cross the pacific and atlantic in great numbers. Wait till The Musk puts his mind to this kind of project! The unit below is available at Amazon.

Electric Airplanes!

We have heard of the Solar Impulse project of 2016, the aircraft that was solar powered that flew around the globe! This aircraft is still very expensive and has not gone mainstream for us to buy but it is a great start!

Many experiments have been and are being undertaken with electric aircrafts by many manufacturers. Just like electric cars, electric airplanes’ flight ranges are still in the low hundred miles.  Batteries are not yet the main power source but are taking a bigger role. Solar panels installed on the long and light weight wings of experimental aircraft still lead the pack for being the source of electric-powered flights that go across massive oceans.

Again, wait until this industry gets noticed by the well-funded and very smart tinkerers of the world like Musk and company! So we may add this category to the future users of our imagined pit stops in the pacific and atlantic!

Electric Motorcycles

Yes, battery-operated motorcycles are now out there! These electric vehicles are not as muscular as their gas-operated cousins yet but they are just as useful for short to medium range commutes. Great for intercity short rides and for sports I would imagine! These are powered by both Lithium Ion and other types of batteries.

Electric Speed Boats!

Yep, you read that right! Speed boats are turning electric as you may have guessed! I have not run into a manufacturer of these boats yet but they are being built by experimenters who pull out gasoline engines from their boats and slap in batteries, electric motors and controllers in their place.

Very promising indeed! I have seen write ups on boats that boast around 30 plus kwhr battery pack, 150 horse power and have achieved 25-30 mile per hour average speeds with a top speed of about 50mph! Not bad at all and it is all on batteries similar to what Tesla Inc uses, Lithium Ions! Not sold at Amazon yet!

Hey Joe:

Thank you for this post on lithium Ion batteries.  It certainly is an exciting development.  It’s also really timely for me since I’m wandering around in the local hardware stores looking at the assorted battery-operated drivers and drills that are available, trying to find the one that will work for me.

I’m not sure that I’m able to order battery-operated stuff (or batteries) off the internet since apparently a lot of that stuff are not shipped to Hawaii for some reason.  Maybe they barge the stuff in (?).  I can find some of them in the stores.

I’m amazed at how much this technology has improved.

Cool Post. I especially like the mini solar kit. It looks interesting. I think we take batteries for granted every day. If we think about most mobile devices they will use batteries in one form or another. The most likely battery is Lithium Ion. These batteries are very cool and can be very flat and compact (just think about your phone!)

As we deplete more resources I think it will force us to come up with more innovative and energy efficient methods for energy consumption and utilization.

Thanks for your feedback Rinaldo! I appreciate it! One day we will be flying across the ocean on lithium-ion-powered vehicles and beyond!

Remy · October 2, 2018 at 4:55 am

Hey Joe you forgot my personal favourite
I see these things everyday getting around the city I live in. Middle aged men all commuting to work.
I also see plenty of segways and hoverboard things but they are nowhere near as fast and cool as the skateboard.
Regarding the electric motorbikes there is a class in the Isle of Man TT now for electric bikes, and they are awesome.
I can see a big future for batteries in homes and generally a push to decentralize power creation.

    Joe Joson · October 2, 2018 at 6:42 am

Hello Remy! You are absolutely right! I will definitely add Electric Skateboards to the website! Thanks! Yep one day storage batteries will spread out to more places globally and out in space when we colonize other planets!!!

Nigel Robinson · October 1, 2018 at 12:54 am

Interesting read. I’m hoping that the cost of battery packs for my solar panels will come down. Up until now, they’ve been a little too expensive to justify forking out for. I’m not all over lithium, but in your opinion, will the cost of lithium battery packs for solar panels come down more in the future?

    Joe Joson · October 1, 2018 at 4:01 am

Hello Nigel! You are ahead of many of us since you already have your solar panels and system! Congratulations! That is indeed a very good first move! You are now guaranteed power during the day! As for the price of batteries, just like solar panels and most of renewable energy components, they are all on the way down although not fast enough. There is a lithium product that is not as expensive but it is the lithium ion phosphate or (liPO04) batteries. They are cheaper but not as good as lithium ion cobalt (the one used by Tesla for their cars) but will do the job.  Do a comparison on google between the two.

Thanks for stopping by and giving us feedback! If you have a facebook account and if you so desire stop by and join my fb group in solar at…   . We have many engineers, installers, technicians and enthusiasts in the group who could add more to our knowledge base.

    Good luck! Stay in touch!

ok, just WOW!! I always knew that the world is going more towards electric-powered…well…EVERYTHING, but the sheer volume of items available that previously ran on fossil fuel is almost over whelming!!
I’m going to check out that motorcycle and see if that is going to work for my teen or {blush} even myself. Amazing article. Thank you for sharing.

    joe joson · October 1, 2018 at 7:04 am

    Hello there Brent!
Hey, thanks for stopping by and leaving a comment! You are absolutely right. The fossil fuel world is not about to disappear! So meanwhile the batteries are slowly eating away ever efficiently at the fossil fuel world dominance. By next year a production flying car is making it to the market in the US. It will be a hybrid combustion engine-battery combination!
Anyway thanks for the feedback. Will leave a comment on your site here pretty quickly! Thanks again!

Dean Gunter · September 30, 2018 at 11:16 am

Hello Joe,
I think you have a great niche there on your site. I accessed it using my android phone, and I have a few comments.
The article seems to be too long and I think you could break it down into different posts for each product. I think that should ease navigation and readability.
Secondly I think it good for you to provide a simple definition of what this type of battery is for a layman like me visiting your site.

    Joe Joson · October 1, 2018 at 5:01 am

Hello there Isaiah! Wow you are a truly sharp guy my friend! You knew I was going to head into breaking these down to their individual categories! The above article is a review of the many possibilities of lithium ion battery usage. Thanks for the feedback my friend! Great to hear that my site is also accessible through an Android! : )

    Thanks again !
